Severe Weather, Steely Dan & The Beach Boys!

Weird comparison huh? LOL! Let me explain the story behind of this one:

I’m a storm spotter and I love severe weather but it wasn’t always
like this. My career of “stormchasing” began when I was young meaning
storms would chase me back into the house or some place for cover if I wasn’t
near home! LOL! Like most people who become interested in severe weather later
on in life, it started by watching “The Wizard Of Oz” and the tornado
scene in the movie. I also became fascinated by the wind at a very early age.
When we moved into the house on Wagon Wheel Trail in Saratoga Springs, NY, my
room was at the very top level of the house. I used to be frightened if there
was a bad storm and I was in the room especially late at night. I used to cower
in my bed worried that I would be carried away to the “Land of Oz”
like Dorothy in the movie! LOL! Radar technology was not as advanced in the
1970’s as it is today and storms could hit unexpectedly with very little
warning. My mom was absolutely terrified of severe storms and passed that fear
onto all of us! Anytime severe weather watches were issued, I would get real
nervous especially if it was a tornado watch. Anyway, music used to relax me
and when watches were issued, I listened to plenty of it! LOL! For some strange
reason when severe weather watches were issued, the radio station that I listened
to would always play “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” by Steely
Dan and some other tunes that I can’t recall the names of or as I like
to call it: “bend over and kiss your ass good-bye” music! LOL! For
those of you that watch The Weather Channel, you know what I’m talking
about! Also when I lived in California many years later, the radio stations
there used to always play “Babylon Sisters” whenever the Santa Ana
winds kicked up! LOL! I’ve enjoyed Steely Dan’s music over the years
and thought you might as well.

One of the first record albums that I bought was an album by Steppenwolf and
a double album set by The Beach Boys titled “High Water”. I paid
about a buck for the Steppenwolf album and $2.00 for The Beach Boys album. I
really loved The Beach Boys album and wore the grooves out in the record playing
it constantly. I use to listen to it when severe weather watches were issued
because the music was relaxing and made me feel better so there you have the
comparison. One of my favorite tunes on the album was “Darlin’”.
Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to find a copy of that album again.
I don’t even remember what happened to the one I had but I did find another
album that has many of the other tunes that I listened to on “High Water”
including “Darlin’”! A couple of years later, I met the late
Dennis Wilson of the group at SPAC and got his autograph.
